The "Captain's Arms" pub still exists in Lloret after 48 years!!! I am absolutely delighted to learn this. I worked there throughout the 1963 season for Tony Batey and Eric Richards but Eric died of a heart attack behind the bar that year at age 35. If the 1963 black & white photo of two men and two girls behind the bar in striped shirts still exists, I am the shortest guy in the photo. Tony is in the photo, also two nice English barmaids but I forget their names. I would love to be brought up to date. Hi Ray Sorry to break the news but the Captains Arms is no longer open. The photos you have seen of the Captains Arm's are old one's from the 70s. Although Tony Batey is still here in Lloret, I'll try remember to mention you to him next time l see him. Do you have any photos of your time in Lloret you could send me to add to the Old Stuff site? lf so please send them to jackiereindl@gmail.com....Thanks in advance Ray...Hope you have a lovely Christmas, Jackie
After the tourist season ended in 1963 I stayed on at Lloret for a while, earning money pulling in the fish nets each morning. It took hours of hard work to get the net full of fish onto the beach. They called the fish "Salsos" but I don't know the English name. Then Moyra Batey asked me to accompany her driving a small Fiat to England so back to England I went instead of remaining in Spain throughout the winter.
When the English-pub-style Captains Arms opened in 1963 in the premises of the previous El Capitan bar, it had a roofless courtyard but Tony added an upper floor over the courtyard sometime before my last visit in 1966. They began construction of a hotel on the vacant lot opposite the Captain's Arms in late 1963 after the co-owner Eric Richards had died at age 35 of a heart attack while doing me the favour of setting up for the evening opening alone while I was practising my saxophone on the outskirts of town. - Ray Morris - first employee 1963
In 1970, with John McSwan as best man, Chris Rogers and Janet got married in Barcelona. Chris worked with Wally in the snack bar at The Captain's. I worked in various other places. When we got back from Barcelona, Tony and Moira (who were the witnesses for our marriage) had put on a spectacular reception for us!! I even have it all on a Super 8 movie. I must dig out some photos.
I worked in the Captains Arms from the night it opened, and was there the night Eric died, I left in 65,but kept in touch with Toni and Moyra, and also their sons. Tony and Moyra have since passed, and Captains was pulled down. I also had Dollies Bar with Edgar of La Cala's wife Gesila. Jim Simpson (Western Saloon) has recently passed away. Ted Law (Wimpy Bar)has also passed away. There is no one left from the very old days. I live in London. They were wonderful days. Jock used to play the piano in the Captains!!!
